Teaching Methods

1) Theoretical exposés aimed at providing knowledge and information, ground for discussion, adaptation and confrontation of models and research practices.

2) Exchange of experiences in connection with the specificities of the dissertation project.

3) Monitoring of the development of the dissertation project.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the seminar, students should:

1) Be familiar with research and reflection carried out in Portugal and abroad, both in a historical perspective and regarding current cutting-edge approaches, in specific fields relevant for Modern Languages: Culture, Literature, Translation.

2) Know how to organize and programm the collecting, treatment and sistematization of information, regarding bibliographic research, archive work and, in general, the handling of a wide variety of sources.

3) Know how to identify the most suitable scientific methodologies, in its disciplinary, theoretical and practical implications; create and develop models which are adequate to specific research.

4) Know how to tune the available resources with objectives to be reached concerning research, so as to ground the thesis project firmly.

5) Have concluded and presented their dissertation project.

Syllabus

This course unit aims to present to the students a set of research topics on Modern Languages, Cultures, Literatures and Translation:

1) Doing research in Modern Languages, Cultures, Literature and Translation.

2) Formulation of objectives and assessment of problems.

3) Identification of the methodology and types of research: rules, models, theoretical background.

4) Data collection work. Treatment of primary and secondary sources: recording, archiving, organization and retrieval of information.

5) Analysis of results.

6) Formulation of conclusions.

7) Directions for developing, writing and presenting the research project.

The collaboration, whenever possible, of colleagues from other national and international institutions is expected.
