Recommended Prerequisites

Fluency in the chosen languages (Portuguese and one or more of the following languages: German, Spanish, French, English and Italian) as well as the theoretical assumptions of Translation.

Teaching Methods

a) Lectures with special emphasis on issues of theory and methodology with a view to the analytical discussion of texts

b) Students will analyze texts, individually or in groups, to familiarize themselves with the various approaches and methodologies involved.

c) Development of an individual written paper.

Learning Outcomes

The possible diversity of education, language skills and interests of doctoral students requires the involvement of teachers from various areas in this seminar.

At the end of this seminar, which follows the Theories and Methodologies of Translation Studies class (1st semester), doctoral students should:

i) be conversant with a large number of translation practices: specialized translation in various areas, both in the field of Humanities and Sciences; literary translation; translation of children's literature; audiovisual translation. Know how to identify the specific translation processes and procedures in these areas.

ii) know how to conceptualize the issues raised by various translation practices

iii) be able to develop and apply a critical methodology to translations

iv) be equipped for a reflection on the contemporary policies and ethics of Translation as an instrument of intercultural dialog.

Syllabus

The the following subjects and their interrelation will be presented in this seminar:

a) reading and discussion of texts related to the field of Translation Studies: functionalist, descriptivist, hermeneutical and cultural approaches

b) analysis of texts from various disciplines, in several languages

c) analysis and reading of translated texts in conjunction with the information and methodologies discussed in a) and b)

d) development of a critical methodology of translation

e) practical application of knowledge
