Recommended Prerequisites

General knowledge of tourism and leisure.

Teaching Methods

Classes with participative and theoretical discussion of the topics, complemented by the analysis of practical examples and the use of texts, maps and other materials, in addition to the practical issues researched and presented by the students. This seminar will consist of classroom work supplemented by field analysis.

Learning Outcomes

This principal objective of this class is the study and critical analysis of how Nature Tourism in different geographical contexts is associated with different forms and categories of active leisure practices, involving a diverse public.  Students will thus enhance the development of skills in the identification, organization and careful evaluation of potential risks that these activities involve either from the perspective of the participants or with respect to the territories involved.

Syllabus

Nature Tourism Conceptual reflection and integration in the most recent concepts of tourism.

Active leisure in nature tourism and the construction of new tourist areas.

Introductory analysis.

Some forms of active leisure tourism and its meaning (examples: hiking, trail running, downhill, rock climbing, caving, paragliding, rafting and canoing).

New technologies and innovation in leisure activities and nature tourism.  The particular case of geo-caching and other guided activities and active involvement with the landscape.

Sport, tourism and nature: a synthesis for 21st century recreation.
