Teaching Methods

Theoretical  and Theoretical and Practical Classes, where the main topics of the syllabus are discussed, according to the following ways:

- Some of the topics will be presented by the teacher; Other will be presented by the students (in seminars): a group of students will present their topics and a group of students will discuss each presentation.

In the seminars, a discussion open to all students will be encouraged. There will be no laboratory practice.

Learning Outcomes

To help students acquire knowledge and skills in order to prepare them  to work correctly and appropriately when faced in their professional life with questions on possible poisoning, specifically the area of clinical toxicology, regardless of the medical specialty they will be working.

In Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology it was considered important to approach:

a)  The General Principles of Clinical Toxicology, including: identifying intoxication situations, the approach of the intoxicated patient and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to adopt in the context of the more frequent poisonings in Portugal.

b)  Some general principles concerning the use and research of drugs in man, including: the introduction of drugs on the market, clinical trials, pharmacovigilance, medical behavior before medicines advertising, adverse reactions, etc.

Syllabus

a) Study of Medicines intoxication, Pesticides, Carbon Monoxide and derivatives; Illicit Drugs: Opiates, Cocaine, Amphetamines and Cannabinoids, among others. Psychic and physical dependence, tolerance, and potential toxicity effects. The importance of clinical information, and circumstantial thanatological in toxic research and results orientation.

b) Distinguish the concepts of clinical toxicology and forensic toxicology, pharmacovigilance and toxicological vigilance.
