Recommended Prerequisites

Although it is a specialty with specific requirements for observation of patients, there is a set of prerequisites that are supposed to be acquired but that should be in continuous improvement:

- Knowledge of English and, incidentally, Spanish or French - needed to access the recommended bibliography;

- Computer skills - necessary for the performance of a presentation;

- Knowledge of biomathematics and biophysics - essential to the understanding of pathophysiological phenomena and for the analysis of diagnostic procedures;

- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology - needed to understand the ear, sinus and naso-pharyngeal-laryngeal-esophagus itself and in its relations with other head and neck systems;

- Knowledge of semiology - necessary for the proper collection of medical history;

- Professionalism - fundamental ethical and deontological principles

Teaching Methods

Lectures:

Theoretical classes aim to systematize the subjects of the chair and its integration into wider fields of medicine and clinical practice.

 

Practical classes:

Practical classes will take place according to the subjects to be taught and to the availability of the University Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology, in the different departments:

- In the outpatient clinic;

- In the ORL urgency;

- In the Infirmary;

- In the operating room;

- In the department of complementary exams.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course the student should be able to:

1 Collect an history with the specificities of the specialty but properly integrated in a systemic medical history;

2 Use the basic tools of objective observation in otolaryngology, particularly the otoscope and tuning forks and, incidentally, the light mirror, the microscope and the instrumental observation of multiple domains;

3 Integrate the semiological data and structure in the pathophysiological entities;

4 Discuss therapeutic approaches.
