Recommended Prerequisites
It is taken for granted that the students have basic and adequate knowledge and skills that include in particular the following:
A. Knowledge
Anatomy: identify and describe the normal morphology of the classic endocrine glands
Histology: describe the structure of the tissues that constitute the endocrine glands
Physiology: basic mechanisms of the functioning of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, glands that secrete endocrine products
Molecular biology and genetics: general mechanisms of cellular signalling involved in differentiation, proliferation and cell death; knowledge of the main molecular changes
B. Skills and attitudes:
English language: ability to read, understand, write and speak english at a level which is enough to understand the bibliography and communicate scientifically
Information technologies: ability to use the internet
Statistics: ability to understand statistical analysis of scientific studies
Attitude/Professionalism: proper practice and intrinsic motivation
Teaching Methods
It is an integrated teaching based on theoretical, practical classes and seminars.
Lectures: interactive audiovisual methods are used, with special focus on the interpretation of the matter highlighting what seems fundamental. It is intended that the teacher is interative and it will open space for students to put their questions. Practical classes: allow a direct contac with main endocrine diseases and the creation of skills in medical/patient relationship
Seminars: allow closer contact teacher/student and place of discussion and debate of concrete clinical situations.
Learning Outcomes
The aim of this Unit is not to train specialists in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The aim is to teach the bases so that in the future students develop the knowledge about Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases that they will need as physicians in their future practice, whatever specialization they choose to have. In order to achieve these objectives, this Unit is divided into 10 major themes, each with subthemes which will be approached in theoretical, practical classes and interdisciplinary seminars. Some of the diseases that students will know about are recognized as the 21st century epidemics, such as obesity and diabetes. This unit counts with the support of a very interested and knowledgeable group of partners that will help students to achieve these objectives. This Unit has also particularly close interrelations with other Units. It is clear that Medicine works with a team and it is multidisciplinary.
