Teaching Methods

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to
– become acquainted with the main determining factors in the learning of Spanish by Portuguese students, as well as with some of the past trends and main features of current methods for teaching it, as observed in teaching materials and official documents;
– identify and describe techniques for teaching the four skills, as well as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to Portuguese learners, and explain the adequacy of those techniques based on their knowledge of the learning process and didactic principles;
– develop basic skills in lesson planning, as well as in research, analysis and production of teaching materials, and become aware of relevant principles regarding the use of different didactic and technological resources;
– become acquainted with principles for the management of time, space and content in the foreign language classroom.

Syllabus

- Learning Spanish: basic concepts (applied linguistics and didactics; foreign language and second language vs mother tongue; acquisition vs learning)
- Methods for teaching Spanish (cross-cultural, multilingual, communicative and task based approach. Analysis of CEFR and national curriculum guidelines)
- Difficulties in learning Spanish as a foreign language: problematic aspects for Portuguese students: “el/lo”; past tenses; gerund; false cognates; indicative/subjunctive
- Materials for teaching Spanish: research, analysis and production
- The teacher and the student in the Spanish FL class
- The physical space in the Spanish FL classroom
- Teaching content (grammar, vocabulary, cultural/cross-cultural, phonetics, culture) and skills (listening, speaking, writing and reading) in Spanish FL classes
- Lesson planning; ICT and planning
- Selection, exploration and analysis of materials: the use of ICT in the exploration of materials
- Correction and evaluation in the Spanish FL class.
