Teaching Methods

Teaching methods may include:
- Expository presentations by the teacher
- Study of practical examples of texts and other materials
- Observation of (parts of) lessons
- Research and presentations by students
- Completion of tasks by students
- Creating (and, if feasible, executing) (partial) lesson plans.

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to
– become acquainted with the main determining factors in learning German as a foreign language, as well as with some of the past trends and main features of current methods for teaching it, as observed in teaching materials and official documents;
– identify and describe techniques for teaching the four skills, as well as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to Portuguese learners, and explain the adequacy of those techniques based on their knowledge of the learning process and didactic principles;
– develop basic skills in lesson planning, as well as in research, analysis and production of teaching materials, and become aware of relevant principles regarding the use of different didactic and technological resources;
– become acquainted with principles regarding the use of the foreign language in the classroom and correction of learner errors.

Syllabus

The following topics will be addressed:
- learning German as a foreign language (the role of the environment and the subject in the learning process; the linguistic competence of the learner)
- Foreign language teaching methods (with emphasis on the communicative, crosscultural and DaFnE approaches illustrated with examples from current teaching materials and guidelines)
- The process of reading and listening and the work with written texts and audiovisual materials in class
- Written and oral production, tasks and error correction
- Pronunciation and the influence of the mother tongue on learning; practicing pronunciation in class
- The acquisition of vocabulary and its implications for its presentation and practice in class
- Explicit and implicit language knowledge and techniques and materials for the teaching of German grammar
- Lesson planning: defining lesson aims and structuring lessons
- materials for the teaching of German: research, analysis and production, use of the ICT.
