Teaching Methods

Teaching methods may include:
- Expository presentations by the teacher;
- Study and discussion of examples of texts and other materials;
- Research and presentations by students;
- Task completion by students;
- Observations of extracts from recorded classes;
- Designing lesson plans.

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to
–become acquainted with determining factors in learning English as a foreign language, some of the past trends and main features of current methods for teaching it, as observed in official documents
-identify and describe teaching techniques (reading/writing/listening/speaking) by explaining their adequacy in terms of language learning processes and didactic principles
-identify and develop communicative, strategic and intercultural skills
- recognize the diversity of learners: different styles and paces of learning
- acquire skills in lesson planning and design
- become acquainted with classroom management
- analyze coursebook materials and develop basic skills in materials development
- compare different digital resources and recognize their benefit for language teaching and learning
- become familiar with different kinds of language assessment
- develop autonomous learning skills by attending MOOCs, webinars and analyzing other resources.

Syllabus

The following topics will be addressed:
- analysis of the national and international curriculum documents, including the Portuguese current legislation;
- English teaching approaches and methods: the communicative approach, Project-Based Learning, CLIL, Multiple Intelligences, Experiential Learning Cycle; - communicative language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing; - strategic and intercultural skills. - types of learner: students with universal, selective and/or additional measures (SEN Students); - lesson planning: teaching aims and learning aims, pre/while/post activities; analysis of teaching sequences in coursebooks; designing lesson plans, classroom observation; - materials development (research, analysis and production);
- the use of digital technologies: Blended Learning, apps and other resources;
- classroom management and types of assessment (diagnostic, formative and summative);
- resources for teacher training and development (MOOCs, Webinars, among others).
