Teaching Methods

The curricular unit will be developed in 4 stages, corresponding to the research work and synthesis work: 1. Presenting the work proposition 2. Revising the state of the art on the work’s topic 3. Gathering and analyzing indicators regarding the work’s topic 4. Presentation final work.
Students will be invited to discuss the results of their work with the group in each stage.

Learning Outcomes

The discipline aims to:
i) develop the ability to plan and execute tasks and ;
ii) communicate with specialists from other academic/professional areas, national and foreign.
iii) develop skills and abilities to work in a team and
iv) carry out research work, analyzing and explaining the relationships and interdependencies between urban environments (material and immaterial) and demographic, economic and political dynamics, with the objective of obtaining health gains and supporting the design of policies and intervention strategies in urban space.
The work will be developed in conjunction with actors external to the University of Coimbra (e.g. municipal councils, CCDRCentro, ARSCentro), whenever deemed necessary.
The development of skills and abilities to work as a team will be promoted so that students can apply their knowledge in the context of the strategic planning of spaces that promote active and healthy aging throughout life.

Syllabus

The subject will be organized into 3 areas, regarding the topics:
I. Urbanisation, public policies and health impacts
a) Urbanization and health challenges
b) Strategic planning for urban health through municipal health plans
c) Transfer of decision-making competence from the central to municipal government (Portuguese case)
II. Place and age
a) Global ageing patterns, geographic variations, demographic drivers of ageing in urban spaces
b) Stressors and socio-spatial inequities in healthy ageing
c) Place of residence as a health determinant in later life
III. Health in All Policies: territorial planning for healthy ageing
a) The role of local stakeholders in addressing the health determinants (social, economic, cultural and physical environment conditions, and others) to promote well-being and quality of life
b) Age-friendly responses to socioeconomic and natural hazards in a context of climate change
