Teaching Methods

The curricular unit will be developed in 5 stages, corresponding to the research work and synthesis work: 1. Presenting the work proposition 2. Revising the state of the art on the work’s topic 3. Gathering and analyzing indicators regarding the work’s topic 4. Practical work 5. Presentation and discussion of the final work.

Learning Outcomes

The subject is intent, on the one hand, on developing planning skills and performing tasks in time and on the other on communicating with specialists on other areas of academic/professional training, both national and international. Another aim is to develop teamwork and research skills.abilities, analyzing and explaining relations and interdependencies between urban environments (material and immaterial) and the demographic, economic and poltical dynamics (for example), having as final goal achieving health gains and supporting the making of intervention policies and strategies in urban spaces.

Syllabus

The subject will be organized into 3 areas, regarding the topics:

I. Urbanization, public policies and health impacts

II. Evaluation of urban population health status

a) Assessment tools and methods

b) Population Health Index application to urban municipalities of Central Region in Portugal

III. Health in All Policies: planning the territory for urban/human sustentability

a) The role of local stakeholders in addressing the health determinants (social, economic, cultural and physical environment conditions, and others) to promote  well-being and urban quality of life

b) Development of a local decision support process in defining strategies and interventions for health equity.
