Recommended Prerequisites

Science knowledge in the context of the main themes of Geography (Human and Physical).

Some basic knowledge related to teaching practices and research processes in the teaching of Geography.

Skills of statistical, graphical and cartographic processing of information and data.

Domain of different instruments and software to support classes and the production of didactic contents.

Teaching Methods

The lessons will take a more theoretical component where we will discuss the elements related to the concepts associated with the didactics, geographical education, formative value of Geography and Curriculum (goals, guidelines, software and skills). The most practical dimension will be related to the management of the curriculum, teaching-learning methodologies and thematic contents (planning, strategies, methodologies and evaluation). We will adopt a teaching method targeted to stimulate the production of materials, the critical attitude and diversification of teaching-learning strategies.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the importance of geographic education in personal training and social development;

Develop skills in terms of pedagogical training and didactics;

Research and handle relevant and updated curriculum, didactic and geographic information, based in credible sources;

Reflect on the nature of geography which should be taught in schools in primary and secondary education;

Interpret correctly curriculum guidelines, programs and several didactics approaches;

Conceive and rank specific didactics competencies for different contexts of teaching and learning;

Use many resources and strategies and recognize the utility of the planning in the teaching of Geography;

Collect, organize and synthesize information about geographic issues and mobilize them in the design of learning experiences;

Conceive correct and original ways to operationalize didactics of geography and to incorporate the role of a Geography teacher.

3.1. The importance of planning the teaching-learning process: specific objectives, key issues, concepts, strategies, resources and bibliography.

3.2. Execution: articulation of content, teaching / learning strategies, resources / learning materials

3.3. The evaluation in Geography: types, processes, registrations and interpretation

4. New challenges in geographic education: globalization, ethics and citizenship.
