Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge about the artistic dynamics of religious culture.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical content will be accompanied by exposure images as support for reflection and debate, leading students to critical thinking. The learning will be supplemented, whenever is possible, through study visits, previously prepared by the students.

Learning Outcomes

Course aimed at the apprehension of trails defined by the religious arts in Portugal, stimulating confrontation between the areas of civil and religious creativity, in conjunction with specific territories of the Church.
The specific objectives are:
- Identification of the religious Orders installed in Portugal throughout the medieval and modern periods;
- The decoding of Conventual architectural spaces and the specific sense of the Orders;
- Understanding of the altarpiece as a tool at the service of the Church;
- The interpretation of funerary structures as spaces of Salvation.

I. Culture, space and time.
1. The sacred and the embodiment of spirituality.
2. The specific sense of religious art.
II. The monastic culture in Portugal.
1. Religious Orders in the Christian universe.
2. Monastic structures. Iconography and equipment.
III. Plastic and ideological construction of Christian spirituality.
1. The altarpiece. Formal developments, materials, techniques and iconography.
2. The space of the tomb.

Continuous evaluation
Continuous assessment based on the following elements: attendance (75% of compulsory attendance), active participation in all subjects taught, a written test and presentation of a research paper (in oral and written forms) on a topic selected early in the semester and developed under continuous guidance of the teacher: 100.0%
