Teaching Methods
Classroom based. Classes are divided into a theoretical component, supported by lectures, complemented with a practical component, based on fieldwork, preferably held in the Central Region of Portugal, due to its geographical proximity.
Practical exercises will be applied to concrete cases, to small watersheds and also the Central Region. coast. A substantial part of the practical work will be done during class, to benefit from monitoring and guidance.
Learning Outcomes
. Understand the dynamics of river hydrology, particularly in relation to the physical characteristics of watersheds with their respective drainage systems.
. Understand extreme hydrological events (floods and droughts), including their causes, evolution and impacts.
. Understand the physical and chemical characteristics of lake waters, their dynamics and geographic distribution.
. Understand the underground hydrological dynamics in different geological formations.
. Identify the characteristics of ocean waters at the surface and at depth.
. Understand the origin and the basic mechanisms of marine dynamics (waves, tides and ocean currents).
. Understand the marine hydrological dynamics in continental Portugal and increase knowledge about coastal management.
. Acquire and develop a set of practical skills for conducting analyses and interpretation in Hydrology.
