Teaching Methods
Lectures and student participation provides a theoretical and conceptual framework for the class material.
In practical classes students will be given other sources where they can access the relevant information needed to build case studies, subject to the following general theme: Public policy and urban dynamics: processes of change and reorganization of mid-sized cities.
Learning Outcomes
The role of cities in affirming the competitiveness and innovation of the territories where they are located and the center of urban issues in the public policy agenda require discussions of matters and the acquisition of technical skills in the diversity and dynamics of the complexity of the urban phenomenon, namely:
. Urban geography, city and urbanization: understand the evolution of urban geography studies, deepen concepts (city, urbanization, etc.), understand the role and evolution of cities in time and space;
. City and territory: analyze the functions, activities, urban dynamics and urban system configuration using the specifics of the process of Portuguese urbanization;
. Development and urban cohesion: understand the importance of planning, new approaches and urban development strategies, policies, programs and tools that have been implemented;
. Promote studies on public policy and urban dynamics.

The following themes around which the program is structured will be presented and discussed:
1. Urban geography, city and urbanization: concepts, evolution, processes. Urban geography: evolution; scope and objectives. City and Urbanization: concepts. City and urbanization processes.
2. City and territory: urban dynamics and the Portuguese urban system. Urban functions: "The city as living a space and place of production." Activities and organization of space: dynamic and urban structure. Urban system: territorial dynamics, urbanization and urban network.
3. Development and urban cohesion: planning and public policy. City, urban planning and land management tools. Strategic planning and urban development: new strategic guidelines. City, regeneration and urban competitiveness: policies, programs and instruments.
4. Public policy and urban dynamics: processes of change and reorganization of mid-sized cities. Case studies.
