Teaching Methods

Lectures, encouraging student discussion and questioning, presentation of fragments of texts/news and documentaries related to the theme.

The practical classes encourage students to formulate targeted research on the issue of socio-territorial dynamics at different levels, as well as stimulating the critical reading of articles and analysis of indicators that characterize and problematize the issues of territorial transformation.

Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the diversity of evolutionary dynamics on the country;

Contextualize the demographic and social dynamics of the Portuguese population in the European context;

Develop a critical attitude about the process of development achieved in the country (includes analysis of indicators);

Develop creative activity through the systemic approach of a sample territory;

Apply improved capabilities to the research process, particularly in the perception and identification of problem areas.

1. Portugal. Geographical position and geographic data base.  The connection of the European territory between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

2. Significant aspects of the national demographic dynamic;
2.1. Demographic Transition: singularities of the Portuguese route;
2.2. The national demographic context compared to the European reality;
2.2.1 Migratory Movements: evolutionary aspects;

3. The main structural factors of the Portuguese territory, from past to the present.
3.1. Qualification of human capital;
3.2. Active population and geographical mobility;

4. Main territorial dynamics of low-density areas.
4.1. Rural areas: development and sustainability;

5. Main territorial dynamics of urban areas.
5.1. Urban Systems, metropolitan areas and territorial interaction;

6. Administrative Organisation of the national territory:
6.1. The concept of concentration, devolution and its implication in the territory;
6.2. Portugal and the EU
