Teaching Methods
Theoretical-practical classes that include group work focused on the analysis and discussion of selected topics under the teacher’s guidance. Classes will also include the reading and interpretation of texts, particularly normative documents, and practical exercises that will allow students to have contact with the working tools of indexing languages.
The final grade is the result of the sum of the following elements: attendance, participation in class, and tests.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should, in general terms:
1. Know the general principles and the application of some instruments of controlled and free indexing language;
2. Understand the role played by these tools in the retrieval of information in catalogs and databases;
3. Know the new structures of representation and retrieval of information arising in artificial intelligence environments.
Specifically, students be able to:
a) Learn the general principles, features and structure of the various instruments of indexing language (lists of free terms, subject headings and thesauri);
b) Assimilate the fundamentals and key procedures and techniques for the implementation of this type of languages, contextualizing them in a specific service;
c) Present the potential and added value of each of these types of language and their complementarity;
d) Present their functions in literature search by subject.
