Teaching Methods

This course will adopt the following teaching methods:
a) lectures;
b) practical classes in manual and automated cataloging;
c) seminars for presentation and discussion of individual and /or group work;
d) study visits.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able to:

a) identify the functions and objectives of the catalog as an indispensable tool in information organization and retrieval;

b) recognize the principles, processes and products of descriptive cataloging;

c) apply correctly the Consolidated Edition of the ISBD to the description of different types of bibliographic resources in manual and automated environments, and evaluate in general the quality of bibliographic descriptions;

d) identify and evaluate the impacts and changes motivated by information technologies in both cataloging and catalogs.

1.3 Descriptive cataloging: principles, processes and products.

2. International standard bibliographic description
2.1. National and international standards: scope, structure and implementation.
2.2. Manual and automated description of bibliographic resources according the ISBD Consolidated Edition: concepts and general aspects.
2.3. Manual and automated description of bibliographic resources according the ISBD Consolidated Edition: policies; specification and order of elements; levels of detail.
2.4. Validation and quality control of bibliographic resource description.

3.1. Linked data and discovery tools: impacts on cataloging and catalogs.
3.2 FRBR and RDA: impacts on cataloging and catalogs.
