Teaching Methods

1) Theoretical and applied explanations by the teacher (40%)

2) Reading and interpretation of texts of the most important authors in each period of the history of logic (30%)

3) Oral and written presentations by the students (30%)

4) Reading assignments as homework.

Learning Outcomes

The students must be able.

(1) not only to describe the main aspects of each period of the history of logic, but also the fundamental trends of the development of logic from ancient Greece to the present day;

(2) to present some of the main problems and trends of contemporary philosophical logic.

Syllabus

1. Logic in ancient Greece: a) the problems of logic in Plato; b) the categorical syllogisms in Aristotle; c) the Stoics.

2. Medieval logic: the theory of “suppositio” and the universals controversy.

3. Modernity and the idea of a philosophical logic: from Descartes and Kant to Hegel.

4. The philosophical foundations of contemporary logic: Frege, Russell and Wittgenstein.

5. Quine and contemporary philosophy of logic.
