Teaching Methods

Classes are theoretical-practical in nature, including lectures according to the manual provided by the teacher and student participation, which will allow for an assessment of their ability to assimilate and understand the material taught and skills acquired, as well as their analytical and critical initiative.

Learning Outcomes

Students will gain solid knowledge and analytical skills of the functioning of the EU (institutional architecture, organic composition and responsibilities, decision-making powers of the EU and forms of governance), the cumulative compliance of current treaties and legal acquis of the Union; a critical understanding of different interpretative and comparative approaches to the political model or related entity (legal-political perspective, conceptualization of international relations and political-philosophical reflection).

Syllabus

1. Brief historical perspective on institutional evolution, methodology and formulas for decision making in the dynamic of  a deepening-widening logic.

2. The organizational structure: the political-institutional triangle/quadrangle, technical or specialized agencies, organs, bodies and decentralized agencies (composition, representation, powers and internal decision-making)

3. Models and decision-making processes of the EU (Council procedures, methods of Union legislative procedures)

4. Economic governance of the Union (coordination of economic policies and the functioning of the monetary union)

5. Theories and conceptualizations of European integration and (classical theories and recent conceptualizations), the political system of the EU (international organization, entity (con) federal ...).

6. Major debates on Europe's future (goals and purpose, democracy and social model, and supranational federalism).

Continuous assessment is the preferred method, without excluding other forms provided for in institutional policies. Grading criteria, to be determined each year, will be based on class attendance, participation in discussions, written tests in class and/or final exams.: 100.0%
