Teaching Methods

This curricular unit employs a multi-methods strategy aiming at promoting an active learning and the development of students' research skills. As such, the curricular unit combines the expository method with the active engagement of students both inside and outside the classroom, namely via bibliographic and empirical research, discussion of the various research axis approached throughout the semester, including the research project, as well as the presentation and discussion of the students' scientific research.

Learning Outcomes

The cu runs in 3 separate thematic classes, each one devoted to a key-issue related to the EU: TP1 - The EU as crisis manager; TP2 - The Politicization of the EU; TP3: The EU as a security actor in the wider neighbourhood. Depending on their profile and interests, students choose the class they want to enroll in. Building on the conceptual and theoretical frameworks and case-studies relevant to the theme of the class, the overall aim of the cu is to provide students with the essential skills to develop scientific research.

At the end of the semester, students must be able to:

1. Consolidate, through supervised individual research, knowledge on central issues related to the EU

2. Develop a research project on a topic related with the selected thematic, including the definition of reserch questions, the research design and methods

3. Building on the project, carry out research contributing to the advancement of knowledge in European Studies
