Teaching Methods

1. Dividing the weekly teaching time into two parts:

a) one, used for thematic lectures, using documentation excerpts, connected to the material being taught.

b) another that encourages student participation in scheduled debates and in the discussion of reports presented over the course of the semester.

2. The class is in seminar format. Assessment is on a continuous basis which assumes continued student attendance.

Learning Outcomes

1. The class is subdivided into three thematic modules and seeks to provide students with the ability to:

a) evaluate the relationship of Portugal in its strategic dilemmas and alternations between the Sea and Europe, position the Portuguese with themselves and with other(s), through the attitudes and actions towards Europe under construction, in comparison with projects of unity and the integration process;

a) think about Europe based on its history, in the face of its dilemas between the longing for peace and unity and the tragedies of war and hatred;

b) think about the philosophical roots of Europe, identify the great moments of European logos and its affect on the current era.

2. Students will learn to develop analytical and reflective skills, critical intervention and introduction to research, with the completion of a written work using available sources, and be prepared for inclusion in postgraduate studies.

3. A claim to citizenship is also implied.

Syllabus

1. Portugal, Europe and the Sea: dilemmas of the past, challenges of the present

a) Between the call of the sea and the connection to the land: "from the great ocean to be discovered" to the idea of Europe and of EU integration in contemporary times (1830-2014)

b) Europe as a sea and Europe at sea: "marry" the Portuguese sea with the European land

 

2. Frontiers of fiction, spaces in fiction - the Europe question

a) Europe between the desire for peace and the experience of war - 19th - 20th centuries

b) Projects of New Europe and the European ideals of resistance

 

3. The philosophical roots of the idea of Europe. E. Husserl and the argument that Europe is born with the philosophy

a) The advent of logos in Europe. The modern empire of calculative thought; the importance of a reinterpretation of other forms of European views

b) Contemporary Europe under the sign of the crisis. Economic crisis, crisis of values, crisis of meaning and the role of Philosophy.

Assessment is on a continuous basis, using the following, among other possible elements, as a basis: a) active participation in debates and presentation of thematic reports b) completion of a research report using documental sources c) a written test in class: 100.0%
