Teaching Methods

Part of class time is occupied by thematic lectures by the professor, supported by audiovisual media; another part includes the analysis and presentation in class of readings performed by students (documentary and academic), and viewing videos for further discussion on the subjects taught.  For assessment purposes, students must perform a book review, which in addition to written form, must be presented orally in class. 

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to relate Portugal with the process of European integration, reflecting on the different Portuguese positions in relation to the project.  Students will understand and be able to explain the Portuguese reasons for and against the project of European integration and the integration of Portugal, as  well as identify the main players involved in the discussion.  Students will understand the problems of Portuguese integration into the European Community as a process of Iberian integration, understand the progression of Portugal within the community/EU, identify positions and proposals on the political evolution of the community project, understand and appreciate the achievements of its participation in the integration process.

Syllabus

As the process of European integration started in Portugal during the New State, this class is divided into two main periods - before and after the dictatorship: 

1 - The New State in the face of Europe in construction

a) the government's perspective on European integration

b) the opening required: accession to the OEEC,  EFTA; the trade agreement of 1972

d) the socialist opposition's view of Europe   

2 - After the 25th of April:  Europe - a political vision

a) European integration: a political choice

b) negotiations: expectations and counterparts

c) The predominance of an economic Europe over a political Europe: discussions and positionings after accession 

3. Participation in the accession process. Results and balance sheet.
