Teaching Methods

Lectures. Reading of recomended bibliography. The evaluation will be either final or mixed. The final evaluation will be by final exame. The mixed evaluation includes the final exam and writing a paper. Student’s performance during the lectures will be taken into account.

The curricular unit aims to familiarize students with basic features of philosophical thought in the field of politics, both in an historical and thematic perspective.

Part I: The emergence of Greek political philosophy

1. The relationship between politics and philosophy: Plato.

2. The relationship between ethics and politics: Aristotle.

 

Part II: Ethics and politics in modernity

1. Machiavelli’s anthropological pessimism

2. Sovereignty, representation and covenant: Thomas Hobbes

3. Property, contract and freedom: John Locke

4. Popular sovereignty and the general will: Jean-Jacques Rousseau

5. The goal of overcoming the state of nature and the peace: Immanuel Kant

 

Part III: Ethics and politics in contemporary

1. State and Society: Hegel and Karl Marx

2. The concept of the political: Carl Schmitt

3. Politics and Life: Michel Foucault.
