Teaching Methods
Theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical concepts are always accompanied by the display of images supporting periods of reflection and debate in which critical thinking is encouraged. Side by side with the theoretical framework, subjects will be approached through a large set of case studies enhancing the ability to decode the heritage discourses in contemporary society.

This curricular unit aims to promote
- a critical reflection on the correlative concepts of art, heritage and identity
- the familiarity with a set of tools crucial for the understanding of the artistic object in its context of production, complexity and specificity
- to enhance the ability to see, decode and understand art and heritage
- the awareness of the dimension of art and heritage in understanding the history of mankind and thus its patrimonial value
- the awareness of the uses of art and heritage as a political and social instrument
- the awareness of the crucial role of heritage in the construction, consolidation and cohesion of identities.

2.1. Interdependence between the concepts of Identity, History, Memory and Heritage. Heritage and power: “uses and abuses. Conflicting heritage: religion, ethnicity, propaganda, military conflicts, migration, exclusion and annihilation
2.2. From the legal character to the broadening of the concept
2.3. The paths of heritage: from Alexandre Herculano to the Venice Charter
2.4. Heritage and UNESCO. Analysis of practical cases: Coimbra, Alta e Sofia, Alto Douro Vinhateiro, Monastery of Batalha
3. Heritage: driver and enabler of sustainability and development.
4. Heritage and tourism: “overtourism, mass tourism, overcrowding, crowd control, detourism, slow tourism, sustainable tourism”. The cases of Barcelona, Venice and Lisbon.
