Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical concepts are always accompanied by the display of images supporting periods of reflection and debate in which critical thinking is encouraged. Beyond the subjects learned in the classroom a large set of study visits will enhance the ability to decode the work of art and to understand the role or heritage in contemporary society.

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit aims to promote

- A critical reflection on the correlative concepts of art, heritage and identity.

- the familiarity with a set of tools crucial for the understanding of the artistic object in its complexity and specificity;

- to enhance the ability to see, decode and understand art and heritage;

- the awareness of the dimension of art and heritage in understanding the history of mankind and thus its patrimonial value;

- the awareness of the uses of art and heritage as a political and social instrument;

- the awareness of the crucial role of heritage in the construction, consolidation and cohesion of identities.

Syllabus

The conceptual framework: art, heritage, identity, memory and history.

The pratical use of these concepts, both criticaly and articulated, will be promoted in two different ways:

1. In the classroom, through major themes of european range chosen each year, such as:

- The ghotic Cathedrals: Saint Denis and the so called Opus francigenum. National and international implications;

- The Allambra of Granada: from the moorish Spain to the Universitas Christiana of Charles V.

- king Manel´s reign and the power of art in building an imperial mythography. Manuelin and Discoveries in the construction of portuguese (hiper)identity.

2. in a practical way, using Coimbra as a field of action for a large number of study visits such as:

University, Old Cathedral, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Machado de Castro Museum, Almedina Tower.
