Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical methodology that favors contact with the poetic text, focusing on the reading of original texts (and critically annotated editions) based on modern translations. The methodology is developed at various 'times':

- lecture-presentation of theoretical frameworks by the prof.

- discussion/debate in the presence and under the guidance of the prof.

- reading, stylistic and literary analysis and review of selected texts

- individual work without the presence of the prof. with the goal of preparing students for debates

- verification and discussion of required readings.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this class students should:

- have a general understanding of the various literary genres of Latin poetry and their distinctive features; the major poets and their most significant works; its connection with the society of his time. 

- recognize the models from Latin poetry and its projection in Western literature, namely Portuguese. 

- to understand the concepts of imitatio and aemulatio as a dialog with tradition in reading Latin poetry. 

- analyze and comment, from a stylistic perspective, on Latin poetry texts by applying theoretical knowledge.

- connect knowledge of other areas in the reading of Latin poetry. 

- to develop skills in the critical reading of texts with progressively autonomous abilities.

- to identify stylistic and literary devices.

- recognize the importance of stylistic and literary devices in the communication process. 

- to acquire a critical attitude toward different readings compared to the same text of Latin poetry.

0. Reading and understanding Latin poetry: the concepts of imitatio, aemulatio and traditio; connecting these principles to the process of poetic composition in the context of Latin literature of classical antiquity;
1. Matter and form: most commonly recurring literary figures and resources
2. The birth of poetry in Rome: under the sign of emulation and translation
3. The various manifestations of Latin poetry:  
3.1 Genres (poetry, elegiac poetry, epic: identifying traits and developmental circumstances of each of these genres).
3.2 Periods (the poetry of the end of the Republic, Empire poetry: political and social context, cultural environment, tradition, innovation and literary renewal in poetry, relationships between poetry, poet and power, national poetry).
3.3 The authors (eg, Virgil, Horace, Catullus, Ovid, Propertius, Tibullus, Martial: significant works, themes of choice, connection with their times).
