Learning Outcomes

This subject aims to present the main questions pertaining to Greek non-dramatic poetry in the archaic, classical and hellenistic periods. The focus is upon the following genres: epic, didactic poetry, monodic and choral lyric, idyll and elegy. By the end of the semester the student should have an overview of how these genres developped in the different periods from Homer to Alexandria.

Syllabus

The syllabus consists in reading and analysing the following authors and works: Homer (Iliad and Odyssey), Hesiod (Theogony, Works and Days), Sappho, Alcaeus and Anacreon (monody), Pindar and Bacchylides (victory ode), Callimachus (various genres), Theocritus (idyll), Apollonius (Hellenistic epic).
