Teaching Methods

Theoretical analysis of the cultural context of Renaissance Humanism in Portugal.

Introductory lectures on each point in the syllabus.  Reading and discussion of translated excerpts from selected authors.  Reading,translation and discussion of excerpts from selected authors. Individual project of study and translation of a selected neolatin inedit text.Translation techniques and essays on literary translations. Periods of review, systematization and summary of the material studied. Timely critical reflection on the historical, cultural and literary issues raised by the excerpts studied

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Latin VI class, students will be able to read, understand and translate Latin texts from the Renaissance humanism period. Students will be able to access the neo-Latin sources of Portuguese culture and European Humanism and can thus investigate the history of this period using original texts. Students initiate investigation by reading and philological study of neonaltin texts never translated before.  Students recognize the continuity of Latin humanism, from classical sources.  Students will learn skills to identify various literary genres through the study of their formal characteristics and contents. Students recognize the rhetorical structure of a text. Students identify and critically evaluate the stylistic features of a text.

Syllabus

1.         Revision, consolidation and strengthening of already acquired knowledge in the fields of phonetics, morphology and syntax, with particular emphasis on the latter.  Study of some phonetic and morphological phenomena, particularly in cases where their knowledge can help to have a better understanding of the Portuguese and modern languages.

2.         Introduction of Renaissance Humanism in Portugal; Renaissance Humanism at the University of Coimbra;

Rhetoric and Renaissance Humanism;

Theatre and Renaissance Humanism;

3.         Translation and disucssion of excerpts of texts by Renaissance Humanism authors in Portugal.
