Teaching Methods

The teaching methodology is based on reading, grammatical, linguistic, stylistic and metrical comment, and translation of latin authors.

The theoretical contents of the curricular unit will be presented through lectures based on practical cases. Students are encouraged to apply the competences acquired through practical working sessions, including the analysis of case studies and exercises.

Learning Outcomes

Students should become acquainted with the main grammatical structures of Latin morphology and syntax, and also with the simple rules of Latin historical phonetics.

1. Reading, comment and translation of texts from some of the following authors:

1.1. Catullus

1.2. Cicero

1.3. Caesar

1.4. Sallust

2. Grammar

2.1. Phonetics and phonology

Latin vocalism. Vowel and donsonant changes. Assimilation, dissimilation, rhotacism.

2.2. Morphology

Consolidation of nouns', adjectives', verbs', pronouns' and numerals' regular inflection; historical morphology of noun endings; the formation of the perfectum; the inflection of irregular verbs such as uelle, ferre, ire, fieri.

3. Syntax, stylistics and semantics

Consolidation of the study of general concord and systematization of the syntax of cases (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative and ablative); of infinitive clauses, in the nci and in the aci; of relative, concessive, consecutive, and final clauses; of the active periphrastic.
