Teaching Methods

- Oral and written systematization by the professor of grammatical contents.

- Reading, translation and comment of Latin texts

- Exercises of translation into Latin and of Latin conversation.

- Reference to the affinities between Latin and Portuguese.

Learning Outcomes

Students should be acquainted with very simple roules of Latin vocalism, with nominal endings historical morphology, and with peculiar syntax of verbs, nouns and adjectives, as well as with phonic-rythmic, metrical, stylistic, techinal-compositive and semanthic-pragmatic codes of the studied texts.

2.1. Phonetics and phonology

Latin vocalism.

2.2. Morphology

Nouns', adjectives', verbs', pronouns' and numerals' regular inflection; historical morphology of noun endings; the formation and inflection of deus, diuus e Iupiter; the inflection of irregular verbs such as uelle, ferre, ire, fieri.

3. Syntax, stylistics and semantics

Consolidation of the study of general concord and systematization of the syntax of cases (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative and ablative); of infinitive clauses, in the personal and impersonal construction; of relative, concessive, consecutive, final and conditional clauses; of the absolute ablative; of the active periphrastic; of the use of ut, ne, dum, dummodo, nedum, quam, quam ut, quam qui, potius quam, quod, quin, quominus.

4. Metric: the elegiac couplet.
