Teaching Methods

active participation of students in classes that will be predominantly theoretical and practical. Theoretical exposition of the programmatic contents in articulation with bending and conjugation exercises, oral and written, to reinforce the memorization of the Latin morphology; Comprehensive reading of texts of gradual complexity and analysis and translation of more complex statements, in interaction with the students. Autonomous translation activities and production of Latin enunciations supervised by the teacher.

Learning Outcomes

Develop and consolidate the morphological and syntactic contents acquired in Level I. To understand texts adapted of gradual complexity, in order to prepare for the exercise of autonomous reading of original Latin texts. The student acquires skills in phonetics, morphology, syntax and Latin lexicon to understand Latin texts of low and medium difficulty.

Latin II develops in continuity with the contents of Latin I:

Morphology

1.1 Nominal bending - systematic study of the 3rd declination. The adjectives (systematization of bending and degrees). The formation of adverbs and their degrees.

1.2 Verb inflection: continuation of the study of the indicative mode - the times of the perfectum; the conjunctive mode; some nominal forms of the verb; some irregular verbs; deponent and semideponent verbs.

1.3 Invariable words: systematization of prepositions and their regencies and of coordinative and subordinative conjunctions.

2. Syntax

2.1 Syntactic functions (systematization).

2.2 Coordination

2.3 Subordination: complementary prayers; circumstantial prayers

2.5 The Absolute Ablative

2.6 Private constructions of verbs and adjectives

3. Lexicon

3.1 Etymological relations between Latin and Portuguese vocabulary, in several domains

4. Use of the Dictionary for autonomous translation activity
