Teaching Methods

The departure point is the analysis and translation of adapted texts. Grammar will be introduced through texts. Version to Latin of some sentences will be asked, to consolidate matters being taught.

Homework; reading exercises.

Active methodology: students are permanently asked to intervene.

Continuous and final evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

-Acquire basic vocabulary;

-know the fundamental patterns of nominal flexion;

-handle the verbal flexion;

-know the basic rules of syntax in order to be able to translate easy texts to Portuguese;

-Translate simple sentences to Latin.

Syllabus

In this first contact with the Latin, we stress the acquisition of vocabulary and elementary morphology and syntax in order to understand and manage the language.

 

Phonetic

1. Alphabet.

2. The classical pronunciation.

3. Accentuation.

 

Morphology

1. Nominal inflexion: first, second and third declension of substantives; declension of adjectives; declension of personal, possessive and demonstrative pronouns.

2. Verbal inflection (v. esse and the four thematic conjugations): indicative (active and passive voices) and imperative (active voice) moods. The infinitive (active voice).

3. Some invariable words: adverbs, conjunctions, and frequent prepositions.

 

Syntax

1. The functions of the cases.

2. The main circumstantial complements.

3. The coordinate and subordinate sentences (with the verb in the indicative mood).

 

Vocabulary

1. Etymological families.

2. Prefixes and suffixes.
