Recommended Prerequisites

Students must possess:

- skills in understanding and translating texts of medium difficulty into Attic Greek;

- a medium level of knowledge of the morphology and syntax of Attic Greek.

-Previous knowledge of Greek: Greek I + Greek II + Greek III + Greek IV

Teaching Methods

Starting from the study of artificial language and -Theoretical exposure, based on textual examples;

-Presentation of the Greek texts by the students, under the orientation of the teacher;

-Translation (and textual commentary) at first sight;

-Solution of small exercises on the board.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course unit the learner is expected to

-know, in a generic way, the main Greek dialects;

- identify the distinctive characteristics of each dialect group;

- be able to comment on the artificiality of the homeric language;

- understand the homeric text and its linguistic subtleties;

- know the metric structure of the dactyl hexameter.

The Iliad and the Odyssey: study of selected steps.

-The linguistic geography of Ancient Greece.

-Introduction to the study of Greek dialects.

-Homeric language as dialectal amalgam.

-The main phonetic, morphological and syntactic aspects of the homeric language.

-Dactylic hexameter metrics.
