Greek I (Beginners).

Teaching Methods

The emphasis will be on the active learning of the language through reading and translation work. Grammatical content will be introduced and systematized using the texts to be studied. Students will translate sentences into Greek in written and/or oral form in order to strengthen the material studied. Homework will be required. Active method: students are continuously asked to participate.

Learning Outcomes

The student should:

– be able to read sentences in Greek;

– master and apply Greek orthography;

– recognize the different grammatical categories;

– understand the fundamental models of nominal inflection;

– master verbal inflection in regards to the active and medium voice for the verbs in -ω;

– understand the basic rules of syntax so as to be able to translate simple texts into Portuguese and short sentences into Greek;

– acquire the necessary vocabulary to understand the language;

– use a dictionary effectively;

– recognize Greek etymology in the Portuguese language.

Syllabus

Morphology
1. The cases: nouns – gender, number, cases.
2. Concepts of root, theme, thematic vowel, endings.
3. The verbal system: tense, mood, voice.
4. Nominal inflection: consonant themes of the 3rd declension; adjectives; the comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives; pronouns.
5. Verbal inflection: thematic verbs. The active and medium voice.
6. Some invariable words: adverbs, subordinate conjunctions, prepositions, some particles.
Syntax
1. The simple sentence: interrogative clause; negative clause; main circumstantial complements
2. The complex sentence: the relative clause; the infinitive clause; the circumstantial clause (time, cause, end)
3. Case syntax (a deeper look)
4. Adjectival syntax
5. Participle syntax
Lexicon
1. Etymological families (continuation)
2. Organization of vocabulary by semantic fields.
