Teaching Methods

Topics will be presented by the teachers oraly and through the visualization of archaeological and other artistic sources, always fully commented.

Students will be called to actively participate in the discussion of the syllabus' topics, namelly by reading and analyzing documents (both in class and at home), previously translated into Portuguese and contextualized by the teachers.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of the proposed syllabus is to develop the following skills in students:

- the ability to reflect on expressions of Greek material culture and immaterial culture;

- to know the historical and cultural framework of the studied universe;

- to understand the process of passing on the Greek cultural legacy;

- to be able to analyse in Art and Literature material and immaterial manifestations of this culture;

- to understand and reflect on education as an expression of culture and a tool for practical and moral training, private or institutional.

1.Cultural and historical framework of the Greek world

2.The transmission of Classical legacy

a)the sources: archaeology and literature

b)orality and literacy in Greek culture

c)the knowledge of Greek literature

3.Art and literature: the obsession of myth

a)Greek pottery and sculpture

b)the myth in the literature and plastic arts

c)case-studies: epic cycle, Herakles, Theseus, tragic myths

II.Education for excellence

1.Official competitions – competitions, cultural environment, religious and political context

2.casual education:

a)children: educators and ludic-educational activities

b)youth and adulthood: the symposium, the palaestra and the agora

3.Regular education:

a)Old education: the ideal of moral and physical excellence

b)New education: educating the citizen for political life

c)Plato’s teaching proposals: public teaching, equal for boys and girls

d)Hellenistic education: rhetorical, philosophical, scientific and literary studies
