Teaching Methods
The classes in this course combine theoretical lecture sessions with practical interactive sessions:
- theoretical lecture sessions: the teacher offers theoretical explanations on the topics, styles, films and directors addressed in the syllabus of the course with the support of excerpts from films;
- practical interactive sessions: students present their synthesis work, which must consist of introducing, screening and discussing sequences of Portuguese films related to some of the issues included in the program.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, students should be able to: (1) know the aesthetic evolution of Portuguese cinema within the history of world cinema through the example of different films and filmmakers of the 20th and 21st centuries; (2) identify and interpret different elements of film language used in the most important works in Portuguese film history; (3) relate the main aesthetic movements in Portuguese cinema with the contemporary intellectual and artistic movements, at the national and international levels; (4) understand the relationship between Portuguese cinema and Portugal, as well as between Portuguese cinema and cinema at large, in its artistic, cultural, political and historical dimensions.
