Learning Outcomes

By the end of the semester, the student should be able:
1. to understand the historical and historiographical construction of the Portuguese Music History, namely its 'art music';
2. to identify and put into context the most significant Portuguese music works and composers;
3. to characterize the main social and political movements that fashioned the Portuguese musical / artistic rendition;
4. to have a stronger conscience of the need of preservation and appraisal of the Portuguese Music Heritage.

Syllabus

TThe course aims to offer the student a solid panorama of Portuguese Music History, presented into context and sound. The course is organized by modules, changeable every year but including themes such as: (1) Identification of the great monodic and polyphonic production associated to the Portuguese Church until the 19th century; (2) John V's Lisbon: aiming for a new Rome through massive importation of Italian musicians; (3) Portuguese music from the 19th-century: new influences amidst social and political conflict; (4) Starting a new century under the sign of Nationalism: the first decades of the 20th century; (5) Between neoclassical nationalism, folk-wise nationalism and avant-garde: half way into the 20th-century; (6) Attempt to a nowadays history of Portuguese Music: identification of the main composers and schools. Difficulties validating, both nationally and abroad, Portuguese contemporary music.
