Teaching Methods

Classes will be expository and dialogued, including the projection of film excerpts, entire films, and moments of discussion that enable the sustained participation of students. Some classes will have a more practical character, of analysis and study of films.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, the student should be able to: (1) understand the art of cinema as material production; (2) develop the ability to appreciate film style and experience; (3) reflect on the differences between types of films; (4) critically discuss cinema as a phenomenon and films as works.

1. Making films (production modes and phases)

2. Disseminating films (distribution networks)

3. Showing films (exhibition and programming)

4. Breaking down films:

4.1. Film narration (construction of the narrative process)

4.2. Film style (patterns and elements: mise-en-scène, cinematography, sound, and editing)

4.3. Film categories (film genres, fiction, documentary, essay, experimental, and animation films)

5. Watching and listening to films (reception and viewers)

6. Discussing films (film criticism and theoretical perspectives).
