Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes. Theoretical contents will be illustrated with images that serve as a basis for reflection and discussion, leading students to developing critical thinking skills. Whenever possible, study visits to museums, previously prepared by students, will serve as a complement to classes.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the cultural and artistic environment of the period between the mid 16th century and the early 17th century. Students are expected to be able to

Understand and interpret secular and religious forces;

Identify and critically reflect on the main centers of production of artistic models and their relation with other centers;

Understand the tensions between classical models and alternative models in the plastic arts;

Recognize the role of architecture, painting and sculpture in the construction of a nervous and nonconformed plasticity.

1. The Council of Trent and the definition of spirituality in the arts.

2. The Society of Jesus and the universalization of Christian materiality.

II. Problems of centers and peripheries.

III. Classical and anticlassical.

1. The architecture of decorum versus decorative excess.

2. Military architecture.

3. Retables: formal development and meanings.

4. Painting and the fascination with “maniera”.

5. Sculpture and the overvaluing of the “idea”.
