Teaching methods combine lectures that introduce the major aspects of the topics, and extensive discussion of texts and issues.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester students should:

a) be able to formulate a concept of aesthetics:

b) present the fundamental aspects of Baumgarten’s thought;

c) distinguish between “aesthetics” and “philosophy of art”;

d) explain the development of the concept of the “artist”, which generated a tradition that we have inherited;

e) be familiar with personalities, works and facts that have led to the erosion of criteria for determining what is art;

f) be able to discuss the issue of correlates in aesthethic experience;

g) organize the knowledge acquired with rigour and convey it with clarity;

h) know how to use primary and secondary bibliography.

Syllabus

Although the syllabus is revised with regularity, there are always some fundamental aspects that define the purpose of the discipline. Thus, there will always be: a) the presentation and discussion of excerpts from Baumgarten’s foundational work; b) reference to the establishment of theoretical constructs such as museums, art criticism and art history; c) the presentation of relevant texts of “philosophy of art”; d) erference to the specif concept of the “artist”; e) an analysis of the erosion of the concepts of “art” and “artist”.
