Teaching Methods

The classes will be both theoretical and practical. The presentation of each artistic movement will be contextualized and accompanied by image analysis.

Learning Outcomes

1. To recognize and characterize Neoclassicism and Romanticism, relating them to the historical context in which they were produced;

2. To identify authors and reference works in the artistic production of the late 18th century and 19th century;

3.  To relate the Portuguese artistic reality with the European, comprising the mechanisms of influence and reasons responsible for some of its particularities;

4. To analyze the artistic object in its specificity, understanding it as "cultural document" of its time.

1.3. Architecture: aesthetic models, new typologies and utopias

1.4. Painting: themes, techniques and pedagogy

1.5. Sculpture: physical beauty and moral virtue

2. Romanticism

2.1. A "new" civilization: the triumph of individualism

2.2. The concepts of beauty and inspiration and evasion mechanisms

2.3. European and Portuguese Romantic architecture: eclecticism and demand of a national character

2.4. Romantic painting: a multiple reality

2.5. Romanticism and Naturalism in Portuguese painting.
