Teaching Methods

Face-to-face classes are theoretical-practical, allowing for presentation of theoretical and methodological frameworks, followed by active peer-to peer and tutor-oriented discussions. Students are required to respond to pre-programmed activities, involving reading assignments and empirical data observation, and they are expected to actively participate in class activities.

Learning Outcomes

The course/curricular unit aims at providing precise and theoretically sustained information regarding language variation, the current status of the Portuguese language in different settings worldwide and the traits that characterize specific regional and sociolinguistic varieties found in these communities. Upon completing the course, students should be able to (i) include, in their understanding of how languages work, the universal nature of synchronic variation and the levels at which this variation can be expressed; (ii) understand the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of language variation studies; (iii) summon the necessary facts and skills required to describe the different traits and the manner in which these operate in linguistic communities where Portuguese is spoken.
