Teaching Methods

One or two critical problems of the Brazilian literature will be selected each semester. A corpus of literary and critical texts deemed relevant for each of those problems will be proposed. The corpus will be read and debated in class. Both the teacher and the students are expected to lecture on the proposed topics, within the context of an assessment mode that allows for a more intense participation (in its oral and written forms) of the students.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students are expected to (i) identify some of the recurrent critical issues of Brazilian literature; (ii) recognize the crucial Brazilian literary and critical texts in which those problems are raised; (iii) recognize the epistemological profile of the discipline, which is neither literary history nor theory proper; (iv) understand the contribution of this discipline to a revisionary broadening of the very concept of Brazilian literature.

Syllabus

The course relies on a model not to be mistaken with that of literary history. It covers a corpus which is not necessarily sequential, but chosen as a function of a recurrent topic in Brazilian literature and its literary field. Relevant texts, of historical periods that may not be close but stem from the previous choice of central problems of the Brazilian critical tradition, will be made known to the students. The disciplinary role will consist of helping to enhance a critical perspective, autonomous in relation to the mainstream discourse of Brazilian literary history and criticism, thus reinforcing the difference of Brazilian studies produced in Portugal.
