Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes combine teacher lectures with practical exercices to use the analytic tools provided and with the reading and discussion of bibliography. Oral presentations by students are encouraged, as well as interactive tasks and dealing with empirical data.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester the student is expected to:

- master basic concepts of morphological theory;

- describe and analyze the morphology of Portuguese;

- apply the learned contents to specific situations, namely, teaching and research;

- reflect critically on the syllabus contents.

1.3. Morphological analysis: units and hierarchies.

1.4. Inflectional and derivational morphology.

1.5. Word classes.

2. Inflectional morphology of Portuguese.

2.1. Noun inflection in Portuguese: gender and number. Noun inflectional patterns.

2.2. Verb inflection in Portuguese: tense, aspect, mood, person, number. Verb inflectional patterns. Irregular verbs.

2.3. Word stress and morphological structure.

3. Derivational morphology of Portuguese. Word formation processes in Portuguese.

3.1 Word formation processes: addition, supression and reduction.

3.2. Types of affixation.

3.3. Compounding: patterns of compounding  in Portuguese.
