Teaching Methods

The theoretical components will be illustrated by critical texts and / or extracts of the novels under consideration. Whenever possible, and in an interdisciplinary context, we will have recourse to examples from the dominion of music or painting.

Learning Outcomes

The students should be able to analyse literary works. In the end of the semester, they should, on the one hand, identify the authors’ marks and, on the other, identify the characteristics from each period present in the several texts studied.

Work Placement(s)

This course deals with canonical authors and novels from the beginning of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century (Modernism to Post-Modernism). The approach will be simultaneously that of literary history (focusing on periods and schools) and that of a close reading of the novel(s), seen as particularly representative(s) of the literary periods and movements in question.

1. Portuguese Modernism

1.1. Orpheu: sociocultural characterization and programmatic texts

1.2. Fernando Pessoa and the heteronymic problematics.

1.3. Presença and the modernist legacy

2. Portuguese fiction of social intervention: Neo-Realism

2.1. The ideological legacy of Neo-Realism: continuity and discontinuity

3. Portuguese contemporary fiction: Post-Modernism

3.1. The problematics of History in the postmodernist novel.
