Teaching Methods
Theoretical and practical classes combine teacher lectures with practical exercices to use the analytic tools provided and with the discussion of bibliography. Oral presentations by students are encouraged, as well as tasks involving empirical data.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester the student is expected to:
- Master the basic theoretical and methodological tools in the field;
- Have a sound knowledge of the structure and behavior of the phonetic and phonological components of contemporary European Portuguese (and its relations with other varieties of the language).
- Be able to apply the acquired knowledge to:
i) The description and transcription of vowels and consonants, in isolation or in complex sound sequences;
ii) The identification of syllabic structure;
iii) The recognition and analysis of prosodic mechanisms;
iv) The identification of phonological features and of phonological processes;
v) The analysis of the core properties of orthography.

1.2. Basic concepts of Articulatory Phonetics: the human vocal tract and the production of speech sounds.
1.3. Articulatory description of the sounds of Portuguese and its phonetic transcription; symbols and transcription conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
1.4. Basic concepts of Acoustic Phonetics; acoustic properties of consonants and vowels of Portuguese.
2. Phonology of Portuguese
2.1. Phonological theories. Core concepts and principles of phonological description.
2.2. The phonological system of contemporary European Portuguese: distinctive features, segments and phonological processes.
2.3. The prosodic structure of Portuguese: syllable, stress, intonation.
3. Phonology and orthography of Portuguese
3.1. Writing systems and its principles.
3.2. The relationship between sound and grapheme: analysis of Portuguese orthography.
