Recommended Prerequisites

Students should have previous knowledge on 19th century Portuguese Literature and preferably should have had enrolled on the discipline Portuguese Literature from Romanticism to Fin-de-Siècle.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods include an expository component, in which the teacher will provide summaries and overviews of the topics, and scheduled presentations by the students, guided and moderated by the teacher. For each edition of the course, a number of works and texts by Eça de Queiroz will be chosen as compulsory reading; additional historical-literary and critical bibliography will be used for consultation and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, students should know, in a detailed manner, the place and significance of Eça de Queirós, as a canonical author, in 19th century Portuguese literature; understand Eça de Queirós’s relationship with the figures of the so-called 70s generation and with the ideas and cultural themes that it represents; understand the contribution of the author’s production to the development of 19th century Portuguese narrative, particularly the novel and the short-story, as well as how his fictional writing changed with the renewal of ideas and themes that are represented in his work. Students should also be aware of the dialogue between the realist aesthetics of Eça de Queiroz and other contemporary artistic domains.

Eça de Queirós in the context of Portuguese literature in the second half of the 19th century. Queirós’s literary doctrine and production: dominant genres and literary strategies. The canon of Queirós’s literature: non-posthumous, semi-posthumous and posthumous works. Eça de Queirós and Romanticism: formation, reception, critique and recovery of the Romantic legacy. Reception and surpassing of realism and naturalism. Queirós’s literary production and fin-de-siècle literature. The literary shaping of “fradiquismo” in the early days of modernism. The last Eça. The cultural fortunes of Eça: performance arts, cinema, theater, television, etc.
