Teaching Methods
Classes are based in selected texts from various periods and literary genres – from the thirteenth century through twenty first century and comprising historiographic and didactic narrative, essays and poetry. These texts will be historically contextualized and critically discussed as representations of a certain idea of nationality.
Learning Outcomes
Regarding content and critical thinking, students should be able to:
a) understand the importance of myth in the construction of national identity;
b) question the correspondence between this assumed nation and people mirror and its successive historical causes.
Regarding skills, students should
a) have acquired (or consolidated) concepts and tools of analysis relevant to studies of culture reflection and be able to use them productively;
b) have developed skills of critical reading of primary and secondary sources.

This course focuses on the birth and evolution of Portuguese mythography. The main structuring myths of national identity representation, as historical constructions, will be critically addressed and put into perspective. These myths will be studied based on different types of texts (historiography, essays, literature, art) in a diacronic line (from its foundation to the present), and focused on its origin, fixing / institutionalization, rewritings and their ideological implications.
The topics and operating concepts to be discussed include: reality, representation, truth, fiction, history, myth, past, memory, culture, identity, people, tradition, state, nation.
