Teaching Methods
Classes follow a theoretical-practical standard, recurring whenever necessary to the reading, analysis and comment of texts from the literary works inserted in the main bibliography or from any other titles considered relevant to the teaching of the items belonging to the program. Some sessions are also foreseen to direct students when they are involved in the composition of written essays, to discuss the theme, structure and, of course, their development. Besides, a weekly timetable is also foreseen to attend students, so that they can present and clarify their doubts.
Learning Outcomes
This course aims to present a general overview of the main Italian literary movements of the 19.th and 20.th centuries through the analysis of representative works. Simultaneously, some references will be made to the social and cultural context, as well to possible relations of intertextuality with works belonging to other periods and literary environments.

The Italian narrative of the 19.th and 20.th centuries
After an historical-political view of Italy from Risorgimento to today, an overview of the Italian narrative of the 19.th and 20.th centuries is drawn, beginning with the evaluation of the historical novel and the function of literature as a scientific and human document during Romanticism and Verismo.Under the Scapigliatura and Decadentism the highlights fall upon the importance of sentimentality and fantasy, as well the emergence of fin-de-siècle sensibility (psychological analysis, literary impressionism, awareness of the crisis of values of the bourgeois society and the exquisite allure for exotic cultures).Futurism imposes aesthetic-literary proposals of vanguard. From postwar to the present, the Neorealism introduces the experience of the armed resistance and Postmodernism stresses the revitalization of the historical novel through the experimentation and intertextuality with traditional forms, different genres and paradigms
